Voluntary Behaviour Change

Design And Facilitation Of Voluntary Behaviour Change Programs

Concepts of Change takes an evidence based approach to behaviour change including designing conversation and engagement strategies for communities, householders, residents, small and medium sized enterprises, government, and people in regional, rural and remote locations.

To get community participation the conditions surrounding voluntary behaviour change must enable the same personal and community goal. This makes change seem easy for the participant because, framed this way, it is something they want to achieve. Participants only get communications or materials or services that they want – hence they end up behaving differently because life is better. This is fundamental to success of these programs. Conversationalists can be provided or people from within the community or organisation can be trained so that the skills remain local. Stages of the conversation include:

  • Finding a problem
  • Facilitating a solution
  • Tools if needed
  • Next steps – agreed action/action plan
  • Social contract

Preparation For Behaviour Change Programs

As behaviour change specialists, Concepts of Change’s program and strategy development includes understanding each different situation and program by talking to clients, but – more importantly – visiting and having informal conversations with people in the target communities prior to the commencement of the program. This means that the approach to each program is customised, using the voluntary behaviour change philosophy. In some cases it includes more formal focus group facilitation, survey design and testing, and evaluation.

Deliver Voluntary Behaviour Change Programs

Concepts of Change has extensive project management experience and maintains quality control across the design, development, delivery and measurement phases. With skilled facilitators, the team enables participation and encourages motivation and self-organisation in communities and organisations so that change will continue after the official program concludes. We do this by facilitating trust and identifying common goals and drivers for participants.

Measure Behaviour Change Programs

To reinforce change among participants it is important to quantifying change – both from the perspective of the client and the participant. Hence we develop a wide array of measures which include: direct measurement of core outcomes and results (e.g. reduction of energy or car use), monitoring of targeted and actual change along the way (in conversations), monitoring of secondary outcomes (e.g. social developments or changes), monitoring of parallel demand and supply measures. Our approach encourages individuals to set targets, measure usage and/or consumption. It also provides regular feedback to enable people to adjust their behaviour to meet targets to achieve personal and community goals.

Survey Design

Design, Development And Quality Control Of Social Surveys

Independent of change programs, Concepts of Change undertakes survey designs (including planning for and carrying out analysis) of small and large scale surveys where rigor and reliable results are vital. Quality control procedures, including scientific testing of designs and use of pilot surveys, are an important part of the service offered.

Training, Coaching, Facilitation

The Concepts of Change team also specialists in training and coaching. Training conversation practitioners within communities or organisations, as well as training and mentoring conversationalists for large scale programs, has resulted in significant behaviour change as well as empowering the community to continue change –always with a focus on personal responsibility and ownership. Liz Ampt has run sessions in survey design in Australia, UK, USA and New Zealand. Facilitation sessions to assist organisations and groups to identify common goals prior to a change program is a specialty.
